Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Were Meant

TWO MORE WEEKS UNTIL NOVEMBER, LILY KING MONTH!

Genre: Non-Fiction

This is the true-life story of Rachel Hollis, entrepreneur and writer, who wants to empower women to stand up for themselves, not take “No!” for an answer, and work hard for what they have. She speaks about her own life experiences with fostering children, adoption, pregnancies, loss of pregnancies, her family, and her business. This book is about perseverance and doing your best.

One of my friends is a life coach, and posts great quotes on Facebook reminding her friends to stop and care for ourselves, stand strong, or just great motivational quotes. I love these posts as they're little reminders in very busy days. I call these quotes reminders because I already know. I know that I need to take care of myself, but (and I’m sure I’m not the only one) I’m always the last on my to-do list. Here’s the thing. I believe that we come into this world whole. Everything we need for this trip we call life, is within us already. If we are lucky, at some age in our lives we will reach the point where we realize this about ourselves, and will spend the rest of our lives trying to block out the noise so that we can find, and listen to, our own singular voice. The voice that tells us who we really are and what is truly right for us. This book is one of those reminders. Hollis does a great job reminding us that we are uniquely ourselves and that, mostly, we should take the time to find that voice and then listen to it. This book, was enjoyable enough but wasn't anything new or exciting, or truly profound.

Before you read this, you should know that this book is written from a decidedly Christian perspective. Hollis speaks often about God and quotes scriptures. In her chapter about sex, she says she can't believe that she's going to talk about her sex life with her husband in a book published by a Christian publishing company. That little tid-bit doesn't appear in Goodreads or Amazon or Barnes and Noble descriptions of this book. I bring this up because if you have an aversion to anything religious, this might not be your cup of tea. But, as I said, it’s a good reminder, and we always need those!
