Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows
Genre: Fiction
This is the story of Nikki, the daughter of Indian immigrants (now living in England) who live a strict Sikh life and expect the same for their children. Nikki is in her mid-20’s, a law-school drop-out, living on her own and desperately trying to hang on to her western life and independence. When Nikki’s father dies unexpectedly, Nikki, her mother and sister have to learn how to cope on their own. Nikki lands a job at the local Punjabi community center teaching a creative writing class. Her students, older widows, dressed in traditional garb, are illiterate, but their imaginations are vital and active and they come up with their own stories. Erotic stories. Through story telling we learn about these women, Nikki, her mother, her sister and their community. This is a story about the many forms love can take and that love, in its purest form, isn’t salacious or tawdry, but sweet and uplifting.
What a sweet story this turned out to be. Confession time. I am really prudish. I'm uncomfortable with conversations about sex as I feel that what people do in their bedroom is their business. So this book was very challenging in that respect. But, eventually, what was clear is that this book has a great storyline and well-developed characters who are funny and strong. It’s a very enjoyable story that weaves a little sex with a fun story that teach you about a rich and beautiful culture and people. I highly recommend this one.
