Daisy Jones and The Six
Genre: Fiction
This is the story of Billy Dunne, a lover of rock and roll and his little brother, Graham. They formed a rock 'n roll band with four other members and named themselves, The Six, for the six members. The Six starts out small with Billy heading the group both creatively and professionally, and pretty soon they have the attention of some of the big names in the industry. At the same time, beautiful, free-spirited Daisy Jones, daughter to famous a model and an artist, begins her skyrocketing career to the top of the rock and roll charts as a talented vocalist. Daisy Jones and The Six play a couple of gigs together and are paired up to create a new band, Daisy Jones and The Six. They eventually hit the top of the charts and then slowly fizzle out at the top of their game. This the story is written entirely in interview format by members of the band, Daisy, Camila (Billy's wife) and some of the behind the scenes people working with the band. This is a story of families, friendships and love, and what happens when rock 'n roll meets the real world.
I really enjoyed this book, but I can't say it was amazing. It started out really, really good. The story of Daisy and then Billy and the band and how they come together is so authentic and real that I often forgot I was reading fiction. But, pretty soon it became belabored. Not because of the writing or the story, but because of, me, the reader. I don't have much patience for the over indulgences of the band members, Daisy and their entourage when it came to drugs, drinking and partying. It was fun and exciting in the beginning, but then I was so over it (a little like it's been in the real world for me). All that said, I would highly recommend this book for a wanna-be writer or someone who is a big fan of writing, in general, as this is a great study in story telling. I wouldn't say that there was any profoundness in this tale, but it's very well written and enjoyable nonetheless.
