Horrorstör

Genre: Fiction

This is the story of Amy, an employee at Orsk, a furniture store in Cleveland, Ohio. Amy is struggling with money. She's barely able to pay for her student loans (for a college degree she didn't end up getting), not to mention paying her rent or buying groceries. But, she doesn't really know what she wants to do, so this retail job at a large furniture store (think IKEA) will have to do. So, when her supervisor, Basil, offers her and her co-worker, Ruth Ann, the opportunity to work extra hours over night, she jumps at the opportunity. Someone has been vandalizing the store overnight and Basil is convinced that if the three of them patrol the store, they'll catch the criminal and call the police. That was the plan before the three met two of their co-workers, Matt and Trinity, who tell them that the store was built on top of an old prison and that they are there to find the ghosts of the former prisoners. Now the plan is just to stay alive! This is a story of learning that human connection is more important than anything, and that finding your friends is a goal worth while going back for, even in the face of horror.

Wait, so I was supposed to be scared? Horror is not my go-to genre, but luckily this wasn't scary at all. It was actually kind of amusing between the description of the furnishings (which sounded exactly like IKEA furnishings) and Amy's off-hand, flippant comments. I couldn't get my brain to believe the scary ghosts or their actions, or to buy into the fact that these people were in real danger. I can't say that this is a book I would necessarily recommend, but it was entertaining enough, in particular if horror is your jam.
