Midnight at the Blackbird Café
Genre: Fiction
This is the story of Anna Kate Callow, who has returned to the small town of Wicklow, Alabama to care for her Granny Zee's beloved Blackbird Café. This is only a short stop before she's on her way to medical school to become a doctor. But this small town is beginning to capture her interest. Her father's parents still live in this town and her aunt Natalie has recently returned to the town as well, with her baby girl in tow. But Anna Kate doesn't know this side of her family because her father died in a tragic accident before she was born and grief has destroyed her grandparents' relationship with her now deceased mother. When Anna Kate begins digging into the story of what happened to her father, will new truths emerge? Can the passing of time heal old wounds? What will happen to the Blackbird Café when Anna Kate leaves? With a cast of lovable characters, some humor and some magic (wait until you read what happens to folks who eat from the famous blackbird pie!), this book is a recipe for an enjoyable read.
This was a sweet enough story of a sweet enough southern town with sweet enough characters and a sweet enough family. It's a story that I've read several times before. It's an enjoyable enough read, but I wasn't drawn to any particular character, any particular event or to the book in general. The story left me as soon as I closed the book. Maybe you will have a different experience with this? I will say that if you're looking for a distraction from every day life, this might fit the bill just perfectly.
